Applying for local government jobs - hints and tips

2. Hints and Tips

1. Always follow the procedure. Councils are very formal organisations and like you to play by the rules. This may be frustrating but at least means that the process is fair for all.

2. Don't cut corners by sending a c.v. Although some councils will now accept c.v.'s, most still want you to fill in an application form and will not consider your application unless you send in a fully completed and signed form. Make sure you know exactly how they want you to apply.

3. Unlike some other employers, councils are very keen on proper job descriptions and person specifications. The JD and PS for the job you are applying for will be an accurate guide to what is required - so read it carefully. And make sure your application explains how your experience meets the job description and how you match up to the person specification.

4. Councils receive a large number of applications for many jobs. So keep your application succinct and to the point - and don't send in lots of extra material unless you have been asked for it.

5. All local government jobs are advertised in some way because councils have to ensure that all types of people have an equal opportunity to apply. Councils are not geared up to except speculative c.v.'s - just keep a look out for their job postings.

6. If you have a friend or relative who works for council ask them how they got their job. If a council has an employee referral scheme then you may hear about jobs from your contact before they hit the press - but you will still have to go through the proper process.

7. Do your homework before you go to the interview. Councils have to publish information about themselves and are keen to tell the public about their vision, values and objectives. Look on Monster for example for profiles on individual employers and note how they describe themselves.

8. Learn the jargon and appear in the know. Do you know what Best Value is, for example? Some of the jargon is explained in another article on this community

9. Always dress smartly. Some councils do have a casual dress code, especially on Fridays. But this is not an excuse to come to the interview in an open necked shirt or trainers!

10. If you are applying for a senior post you may be interviewed by councillors (politicians). Councillors can be a tough audience and want to think you understand their role in running the council. They will want to know you are the sort of person they can work with and that you fit the council culture, whatever that may be.

Happy job hunting!
